The National Carbon Offset Standard (NCOS) was launched on 1 July 2010 and provides a voluntary standard for organisations to use in becoming ‘carbon neutral’ or developing ‘carbon neutral’ products. NCOS is the successor to the Greenhouse Friendly program and many of the products that were Greenhouse Friendly accredited have transitioned to NCOS.
The Australian Government is currently undertaking a review of NCOS and will update it to reflect developments in domestic and international carbon markets and experience with the Standard to date.
Next Steps: The NCOS discussion paper and the draft revised standard are currently available from the Department of Climate Change and Energy Efficiency (DCCEE) website (http://www.climatechange.gov.au/media/whats-new/ncos-review.aspx ) and submissions close 12 October 2011.
